A Walk Through Jacob Riis Houses NYCHA with world renowned street artist Al Diaz
In March 2024 local legend Al Diaz brought us on a walk through Jacob Riis Houses where we stopped at The Amp and talked about his memories of growing up here and how the environment has changed since the day Lady Bird Johnson declared it the greatest public housing development in America during her visit with Brroke Aster and Mayor Lindsey on 23 May 1966. Produced by Susan McKeown for Cuala Foundation. Cuala Foundation collaborates with communities to repair, recover and build social, economic and cultural power.
NYCHA Jacob Riis Houses New York City visit by Lady Bird Johnson May 1966
As part of our project with world-renowned street artist Al Diaz we researched and brought together Associated Press and NYPD surveillance footage of the day Lady Bird Johnson, Brooke Astor and Mayor John Lindsey visited Jacob Riis Houses on the Lower East Side. Al was there that day when Lady Bird declared Jacob Riis the greatest public housing development in America. We produced the project in 2024 and 2025 as Jacob Riis residents faced the threat of privatization that they ultimately rejected in April 2025.
