Cuala Éire Updates

Éire is the indigenous name for Ireland.
Cuala works with the communities of Inchicore (Dublin), Bray (Wicklow), and Fanad (Donegal) as well as with indigenous Traveller communities, collaborating to create new systems of social, economic and community power.
Ireland’s experience of colonization for over 700 years resulted in trauma over generations that still impacts Irish people today.
These two statistics about Irish women, spanning over a century, are important for understanding the impact of Irish historical trauma:
• Of all the emigrant groups that arrived into New York Harbor throughout the 19th century what was egregious about the Irish was the overwhelming amount of women who came alone: 10 women for every 8 men, mostly aged 15-24.
• Today, Ireland has the highest rate of suicide in Europe for young women and girls aged 15-24.
Understanding how some community voices have been historically marginalized or oppressed, we have developed actionable programs that centre, empower and facilitate voices to expand their perception of who they are and what they can become, and express themselves in ways that are empowering and show the way forward.
