Jacob Riis Campaign to Protect Public Housing
Early in 2024 NYCHA launched a year-long campaign to encourage the residents of Jacob Riis Houses to vote for the controversial RAD PACT conversion process that would privatize their homes. Cuala Foundation produced the first annual Jacob Riis celebration with the creation and installation of a new sculpture by world renowned street artist (and former Riis resident) Al Diaz, produced a film about the day Lady Bird Johnson, Brooke Astor and Mayor Lindsey visited Riis Houses and declared it ‘the greatest public housing development in America’ and ran an educational campaign to inform residents about the risks of PACT as highlighted by Human Right Watch and a NY State Comptroller’s December 2024 Audit.
